44 Indian men were arrested in Sri Lanka by immigration officials on 5 Sept 2019 for overstaying their visa period for approximately three months, as per the media report.
The authorities of the Emigration and Immigration Department arrested all 44 Indian men when they were working at a construction place at Slave Island, which is a Colombo's a suburb, the media reported.
All the arrested were men and they are aged within 25 to 50 years, M G V Kariyawasam, Assistant Controller of Investigations, stated, continuing that all the men had overstayed roughly three months tenure later their visas expired.
M G V Kariyawasam, Assistant Controller of Investigations, also announced that it was unveiled while investigating them that they have not been paid wages on a monthly basis, as per the report statement.
They are to be presented over to the Detention Centre of Mirihana the official stated.
In a separate case, he told that passports of the another 18 Indians, who are also working in the same construction place, were taken into custody as their visas did not authorize all of them to work at that specific site.
It is not the initial time that Indians have been arrested in the nation's island for overstaying their visa period.
Meanwhile, a minimum of 27 Indians, along with 5 women, were taken into custody in Jaffna in the last month for overstaying their tourist visa period in Sri Lanka.
