An Indian man in the US on a student visa has pleaded guilty to frying computers owned by The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York and could hence face up to 10 years jail term as well as pay a huge fine.
In February, 27-year-old Vishwanath Akuthota, who earned a master’s degree in business and in computer information systems from Saint Rose, was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the destruction of several computers - worth $58,000 or Rs 4,0,26,215 - owned by the college.
Akuthota was said to have used a USB killer device to wreak the massive havoc. When a USB killer device is inserted into a computer, it charges and discharges the computer's on-board capacitors quickly and repeatedly. This quick and repeated charging and discharging will damage the port, hard disk, and overall electrical system of the computer hence leaving its electronic device inoperable, according to a US Federal agent.
According to reports, Akuthota used USB killer device to destroy a total of 66 computers and many more computer monitors on February 14. He was taken into custody on February 22 following his arrest in North Carolina. He pleaded guilty on Tuesday, April 15 and will be sentenced on August 12. He faces up to 10 years behind bars as well as $250,000 fine. He will also be supervised for about three years after serving his jail term.
The accused filmed himself as he destroyed the computers and shouted I am going to kill this guy before destroying the computers, according to Akuthota's admittance as revealed by the US Department of Justice.
